BICORNUATE UTERUS

ABOUT

This page shows the anatomy of a Bicornuate Uterus. It is described as a 'heart-shaped' womb characterised by a deep indentation at the Fundus. This is caused by an incomplete fusion of the Ducts at the Uterine Horns.

This classification can further be divided into Partial and Complete. These models show a Partial Bicornuate Uterus which does not reach the Internal Os of the Cervix (see below models).

This condition is usually benign and most patients are asymptomatic. However, this can cause an increased risk of pregnancy complications.

A typical diagnostic test includes a HSG (hysterosalpingogram). This test only depicts internal cavities, not the fundal contour. Both the Septate and Bicornuate Uterus are difficult to differentiate with this test as they have similar cavity contours and are commonly misdiagnosed. Further diagnostic tests include 3D ultrasounds and MRIs.
